Review (in Lithuanian):
In the tower of loneliness
"The beginning of the performance could be called the most impressive part of the work. The carefully staged scene allows the audience to experience the intense, uninterrupted presence of the actors and to feel the excitement. This part also gives the audience a chance to fall in love with Maja and feel antipathy towards Lars. It also allows them to become biased witnesses to the situation discussed later. The insertion of cinematic expression into the theater scene becomes an opportunity to sharpen the sense of reality. In addition, this creative decision serves a dramaturgical function, helping to distinguish between the parts of the play that could be described as an event and a trial, or the anticipation of change and a return to a changed everyday life."
One book and two shows
"I think it’s worth going to this performance just because of the multilingual actors who carry the dense text of the play around the stage like a feather. It’s amazing that the play was written by a Hungarian, Kata Wéber – on stage it looks absolutely Polish. Maybe because of the dominant female characters, because of the problems of pregnancy, childbirth, the right to one’s own body, as well as because of the increased domesticity, detail, and talkativeness, which seems to us to be incompatible with the strict, angular Hungary."
From our plays. Letters on theatre
"Among the last premieres of the season, the play “Pieces of a Woman” created by director Uršulė Bartoševičiūtė at the Vilnius Old Theatre stood out. And not only because it is performed in Polish. Strong roles of actors, non-cliché and ambiguous characters, Kata Wéber’s play updated for our context, attention to female characters, their free choices and the responsibility for them – all this shows the director’s style and professionalism."
Calibrating a telescope for future
Finding your own unique line of sight, calibrating a telescope – or microscope – takes time, and it also takes time to discover the objects you want to observe through these instruments. There is no doubt that director Uršulė Bartoševičiūtė, who has already mastered the instruments of theatre quite well, will soon probably take that step of discovery that can open up new horizons. Now it is a pleasure to observe her technical mastery and it is not at all bad if the image sometimes blurs. This is a process. And I believe that it leads to discoveries – interesting discoveries.
